Youth Exchange “Humanity is No Borders” in Mersin, Türkiye

Between 22–29 October 2024, young people from Georgia, Romania, and Türkiye came together in Mersin for the Erasmus+ youth exchange “Humanity is No Borders.” We took part in the project as the Romanian partner was in this impactful initiative.

The project placed a strong focus on an often-overlooked issue: the experiences of refugee women. While refugee studies and policies have frequently been shaped through a male-dominated lens, this exchange highlighted the urgent need for a gender-sensitive approach when addressing refugee challenges, especially in countries with large refugee populations.

Project Objectives

Throughout the exchange, participants explored and discussed critical topics, including:

• Understanding the true meaning of “refugee,” beyond stereotypes and generalizations.

• Raising awareness that anyone, regardless of background, can face forced migration.

• Supporting public consciousness around gender issues and women’s rights in displacement contexts.

• Learning about the specific challenges refugee women face, including discrimination, gender-based violence, and lack of legal protection.

• Comparing refugee protection policies across different countries and reflecting on their effectiveness.

• Promoting humane, empathetic, and non-discriminatory attitudes toward refugees.

• Strengthening the promotion of gender equality in social and political life.

• Building awareness about the unique psychological and emotional burdens refugee women carry.

Impact

Through workshops, discussions, and interactive activities, participants developed deeper empathy, knowledge, and awareness. They explored how legal frameworks and policies can better protect refugee women and how societies can contribute to reducing racism and discrimination.

Most importantly, the exchange fostered solidarity, understanding, and friendship across borders, reminding us all that humanity has no borders.

We are proud to have taken part in this meaningful project and look forward to continuing our efforts toward refugee rights, gender equality, and social inclusion.
